Habili Kebir

The Arabic language is very flowery. “Habili” means “unborn,” and “Kebir” means “large,” so it translates to “The Unborn Great Reef.” The term “Habili” always refers to a reef that begins a few meters below the water’s surface. In the case of Habili Kebir, the reef top lies approximately 3 to 5 meters below the water’s surface.   The entire reef is a drop-off reef; the walls drop steeply to about 60 meters, after which a gently sloping sandy bottom begins.   On the east, north, and west sides, Habili Kebir is very diverse and lushly overgrown even at great depths. Gray reef sharks are frequently spotted at the western corner near the gorgonian fan field.   At the eastern corner, it’s always worth casting your gaze into the blue, as barracudas, large tuna, and gray reef sharks can sometimes be spotted there.   The inner reef area on the south side is interesting for its overhangs, which range from 8 to 15 meters in depth. Beneath these overhangs, you’ll find groupers, thick moray eels, blue-spotted stingrays, and, with a little luck, small whitetip reef sharks.
