Shaab Rumi at a glance

Located some 25 miles northeast of Port Sudan, this reef features a plateau at a depth of 9 meters, with steep drops on all other sides.

Here, Jacques Cousteau and his team had anchored an underwater station, the “Precontinent II,” to study the effects of long-term underwater stays on divers with full saturation of all gases in their bodies. One of the findings of the experiment was that divers, once fully saturated, could potentially remain submerged indefinitely—provided, of course, they had enough air. What is truly incredible, however, is that this experiment was conducted as early as 1963 by scientists whose knowledge was far ahead of their time.

The remains of this expedition are still there and are well worth a dive. South of Shaab Rumi lies a plateau at a depth of 23 meters. Here you’ll find countless sharks, barracudas, and humphead parrotfish.
