Shaab El Erg

Shaab El Erg is a large, horseshoe-shaped reef. At its southeastern end, there is a channel about 8 meters deep between the end of the main reef and two small, round reefs. This channel is beautifully covered with table corals and small coral blocks.   With a little luck, you might encounter a school of dolphins while diving at Shaab El Erg. You can often hear the dolphins long before you see them. So, when diving at Shaab El Erg, always keep an ear out for whistling and beeping sounds! When encountering dolphins, it’s important to gain their trust and pique their curiosity. If you swim directly toward them or even try to touch them, the dolphins will quickly swim away. However, if you dive parallel to the dolphins and maintain a distance, the dolphins will often close the gap on their own. If you then perhaps stand on your head or try to do a somersault, the marine mammals often become very curious and come over to see what strange things the divers are doing. They usually then start playing themselves and impress us with unusual movements.   This is how a moving and meaningful interaction between dolphins and humans—one that a sensitive diver can understand—can unfold underwater.
